Enfield Dispatch | Young ‘squirrels’ join local Scouts movement

Enfield has invested its first-ever ‘squirrels’ – the newest and youngest section of the Scouts movement.

Two twin boys and one girl were enrolled into the 28th Enfield Scouts near Durants Park and made their promise to do their best, to be kind and helpful and to “love their world”.

The squirrels group is open to children aged between four and six. Previously, the youngest anyone could join the Scouts movement was aged six, when they became eligible for beavers. The new recruits were presented with their squirrel jumper, neckerchief and badges by assistant district commissioner Corinne Dowsett, better known as ‘Badger’.

Yuzu, aged five, said: “I feel happy and smiley. I’m really excited because I’m the first one. At Squirrels we play games, we collect stuff from outside, we make things and do activities. I like being a Squirrel because we can do lots of fun stuff.”

Squirrels leader Georgina Waterhouse, better known as ‘Butterfly’, added: “I feel extremely emotional, very proud and happy to have our first squirrels invested. We hope for these children to grow and acquire the skills they need to progress into beavers.”

Squirrels launched in various locations nationwide in September last year. Squirrels groups aim to build skills for life through a programme including outdoor activities, crafts, story-time and working towards badges. Once they are old enough, squirrels can move on to beavers (six to eight years), cubs (eight to ten years), scouts (ten to 14 years) and finally to explorers (14-18 years).
